Reading Time: 3 minutes

So I’m 15 days into this crazy challenge of mine for this year. Having not reported on here how I’m doing I guess you might be wondering whether or not this is actually a viable prospect?

What? You don’t know what I’m doing as my main challenge for this year? Really? Okay, here’s a recap. During 2012 I hope to complete 2012 human-powered miles but not only that, I intend on smashing that by:

  1. Walking at least 1000 miles
  2. Running at least 1000 miles
  3. Cycling at least 2012 miles

In order to hit those targets I’ll need to do the following each day:

  • Walk 2.74 miles
  • Run 2.74 miles
  • Cycle 5.51 miles

The scores on the doors I hear you ask? Okay, here’s a breakdown of the first week, plus Sunday the 1st January:

So what does that all mean? A good question. Here’s a breakdown of the totals for my walking, running and cycling from the last two weeks:

Not a bad start even if I do say so myself. I’ve certainly surprised myself with how much I’ve been able to do. But not to get too complacent with what I’ve managed to achieve so far, here’s a breakdown of what I’ve still got left to do this year to hit all my targets for this challenge:

Just to really hit home how mad this whole idea is, over the course of the year – assuming I manage to complete all the miles I want to do – I will travel a minimum of 4012 miles. I did a bit of digging round to see where I could get to if I left home and covered that amount of miles around the globe.

By travelling 4027 miles on roads from Reading, a little over my minimum target, I would hit Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Here’s a plot of that route from Reading to Riyadh in case you were interested in seeing just how far that is. How mad?!

All in all I don’t think I could have had a better start than this. I’m committed to this challenge, and to try and get the most out of it I’m going to set up a sponsorship page. I’m looking at using the Virgin Money Giving site this time as I can select multiple charities to support on one single page – a lot easier than setting up multiple pages.

I’m currently waiting for one of the charities I want to support to get signed up with the Virgin site, hence no sponsorship page yet. Once they do I’ll sort it out and post a link on here, Facebook and Twitter so that everyone knows.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, this will be it as far as sponsorship goes for the year. All my activities, organised runs/events will all be going towards my yearly mileage and so will all be sponsored through this one page. I know times are hard at the moment but I hope that you’ll all be able to find a few pounds to make all this effort worthwhile.

Two full weeks down, only another fifty to go!
