Reading Time: 2 minutes

After having read about Alice’s bucket list the other day on Twitter, and the subsequent media snowball, I thought I’d try and do my bit. I don’t mean to help Alice with her bucket list; from the sounds of things she’s had an overwhelming amount of help and support since hitting the media headlines and is well on the way to getting her wishes reality. This is amazing and just goes to show how many caring and wonderful people there are out there. No, I wanted to do something myself and also to highlight to all you lovely people what you could do to without too much effort.

Currently there are almost 1,600 people in the UK waiting for a stem cell transplant and 37,000 worldwide. In particular need at the moment are male donors between the ages of 18 and 30 – I’m too old for that unfortunately – but still being within the overall window of opportunity, I’ve joined the donor’s register at the Anthony Nolan charity. It’s a simple online registration form with some medical questions and the like to answer but it only took a few minutes to do.

Once the application has been checked over, and if everything checks out okay, they’ll send out a saliva testing kit for me to send back to them and that’s it. Well, that is unless I need to donate of course but there’s no guarantee that that’s going to happen. That being said, it doesn’t mean that joining is a potential waste of time and I urge all of you to do the same and sign up!

Alternatively, if you already give blood regularly you can join the British Bone Marrow Registry the next time you give blood. All you’ve got to do is inform the staff at the blood donation session that you wish to join the BBMR before your blood donation is taken.

You don’t need to join both registries, just one, so why not do it today and potentially help someone in grave need?!

I’ve also decided to start giving blood again. I used to do it regularly a long time ago but, mainly because of getting inked up so often, I wasn’t eligible to do so. I’m going to change that and start doing it again. I’ve booked my next blood donor session on the 24th June so it’s all go! You can register and book blood donor sessions online at Give Blood. Go on, you know you want to!

Help spread the word and do yourself a favour, make yourself feel good about doing something for someone in need – join up and become a donor now!

If that’s not enough to get you off your backside and do something selfless, that doesn’t cost anything or take hardly any of you time, then maybe the following videos will help to persuade you to do it:
